From found footage to a modern VHS film, check out Derek Ted’s new videos

Pure Noise Records has been busy. Not only have they just signed alt-rockers Microwave – who we recently featured ahead of their third album and UK tour – they’ve also added Derek Ted to their roster. The signing comes just in time for the release of his new eight track EP, Better Spirit, which is out now.

The lead single is Sew Me Up. Ted is especially proud of the video as it brings together found footage documenting his life. He explains: “This song is about friendship and almost like a love song for your best buds…This video was directed by my best friend (Kevin Patrick) and we used tons of old lo-fi footage going back to the days of living in [San Francisco]. I didn’t know it at the time…but we had been filming this video for the past 7 years.”

Building on the momentum, he quickly released another new single with an interesting video. He filmed it on VHS during the time he wrote the song: “L U C K Y is one of the more vulnerable tracks on my new record and I wanted the video to be like a lo-fi journal entry of that time.”

While Ted’s voice is melodic and tender – a world away from his formative experiences in screamo bands – the EP mines darker, harder themes lyrically: “I wrote this record to pull myself out of my own darkness. It was a way to push through and find hope in a time when I felt like I had none.”
