Ash and The Subways: Oh Yeah, Oh Yeah!

You might have heard that Ash and The Subways are touring together, but have you spotted their deeper connection?

Real talk: the lyrics “Oh yeah, it was the start of the summer” (Oh Yeah by Ash, 1996) and “It’s your eyes that make me smile, oh yeah, oh yeah” (Oh Yeah by The Subways, 2005) have lived rent free in my head as earworms every day for decades. So, it’s safe to say that I’m *very* excited that Ash and The Subways are covering each other’s Oh Yeah single on tour. They’ve recorded their Oh Yeah covers for posterity too!

The Subways’ version of Ash’s Oh Yeah is available to stream right now. It’s a delightfully drop D, bass-heavy, retro-tinged indie ode to a teenage romance, and it’s set off beautifully with dreamy backing vocals.

The Subways’ frontman, Billy Lunn, explained: “We’ve loved [Ash’s] Oh Yeah since we were kids, so we hope we did it justice! And we can’t wait for you all to hear what they did with our Oh Yeah!”

Ash’s version of The Subways’ Oh Yeah, which also reminisces about teenage love and teenage years, will be released for streaming in November.

Ash and The Subways: Oh Yeah Squared vinyl

There’s no need to wait, though! As Ash and the Subways are touring together, a strictly limited edition 7″ vinyl release of both songs, Oh Yeah Squared, is being sold on the merch desk.

In homage to the original 7″ singles which were on white vinyl (The Subways) and yellow vinyl (Ash), this new record is made up of white and yellow dust suspended in clear vinyl.

Only 1,000 copies of this 7″ will ever be made, and most will be sold on the bands’ co-headlining tour of the UK and Europe. If you can’t make it, hope that someone buys you a copy at a gig, or that Alcopop! restock because their initial allocation is already sold out! OH NO!
