Kat Van D included synth-laden songs Enough and Lost At Sea on her debut album Love Made Me Do It, backed up by her live band. However, Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) was on drums for the original recordings! These Kat Von D and Dave Grohl heavier alt versions are now available as the Bat Cave mixes.
Fellow icons Kat Van D and Dave Grohl obviously worked together well. She explains: “[I admire] how versatile he is, it was so cool to watch him play drums on songs that no one would ever expect to hear him play on.” These versions were recorded in London with producer Adam Noble. They were mixed by GRAMMY®award-winning producer and mixing engineer Alan Moulder.
These collabs between Kat Von D and Dave Grohl are part of a particularly prolific period for Von D. Her EP Exorcisms included remixes by Gunship, Cold Cave (whose co-founder, Dan Haigh, mixed her debut album), Scratch Massive, and Kraftwerk’s Henning Schmitz aka NEO.
She also recently released a cover of Selena‘s Fotos Y Recuerdos. The song was itself a Spanish language cover of The Pretenders‘ Back On The Chain Gang.
Although Von D made her name as a tattoo artist on reality-TV show LA Ink, music is her first love. She routinely played piano for nearly two hours a day, and she studied voice under Ken Tamplin six days a week! She has also written with GRAMMY® Award-nominated Linda Perry, as well as her own songs. Her band includes two synth players and a contortionist so rest assured that performance is as integral to her music as it is to her unforgettable aesthetic! To top it off, her debut album includes never-before-heard recordings from legendary scream queen Vampira (Maila Nurmi).
